What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy seeks to help the body heal itself. It is a system of healthcare which encourages and promotes the body’s natural, self-healing mechanisms using a wide variety of approaches. Naturopaths are trained in nutritional therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, herbal medicine and homeopathy. However, most Naturopaths specialise in one of these areas. Naturopaths treat the individual, not the illness, and aim to find causal factors underlying the person’s symptoms.

The person as a whole is treated, while looking to balance all aspects of the body, not just the affected area. Naturopaths seek to empower the individual to be present and involved in their own healing journey, while offering support in areas such as diet, nutrition, stress management and lifestyle.

Naturopathy

Although each Naturopath may work a little differently, we all follow the same philosophy:

  • First, do no harm. For example, no treatment that could produce strong side effects or harm the body in any way.
  • Treat the person not the illness. For example, your high blood pressure may be treated very differently to the next persons even though you have the same blood pressure reading.
  • Treat the cause not the symptoms. Symptoms are the body’s warning signals that something has gone awry and is out of balance. We look to find the reason behind the symptoms and address that.
  • Use the healing power of nature. Naturopaths look to nutrition, vitamins, minerals, herbs and lifestyle changes as effective tools against poor health.
